Dryer Vents

On average dryer vents need to be cleaned once a year in a single family home. THC usually schedules annual dryer vent and chimney cleanings for the same time every year. However, dryer vent cleaning needs can vary from household to household; high volume dryers need cleaning every six months. For example if you have a large family using your laundry equipment, you will need to have your dryer vent cleaned more frequently. This would also apply if you use a lot of towels, for instance if you live by the beach and launder beach towels frequently, towels produce more lint than clothes so you would require more frequent vent service. On the contrary if you live alone and rarely purchase new clothes, your dryer vent may be able to go almost two years between cleanings. The best thing you can do for your home is watch for warning signals that the vent may need to be cleaned and schedule a cleaning appointment as soon as you notice one or more of the signs.

How Do I know if my Dryer Vent is clogged?

Signs of a clogged dryer vent:

Clothes Take a Long Time to Dry.

A Clogged vent traps moist air inside the dryer when it should be escaping. This means your clothes will still be damp after the dryer stops running and you will likely have to run the dryer multiple times to get the clothes completely dry which is inefficient, time consuming and costly.

The Outside of the Dryer Gets Hot to Touch.

In this case a clogged vent is preventing the dryer from exhausting properly. This not only wastes energy, but also puts unnecessary strain on your machine. If your dryer gets too hot, you may also detect a burning smell- which is a red flag.

If you notice a burning smell coming from your dryer stop the dry cycle immediately and call your vent cleaning professional for a service appointment. Don’t invite the risk of fire into your home and to your family.

The Vent Hood Flap Doesn’t Open.

If the duct hood flap cannot open, or if lint and debris are visible around the dryer hose or outside of the vent opening, that means airflow is blocked.

It Has Been Over A Year Since the Vent Was Cleaned.

Never wait more than a year between cleaning appointments, schedule a dryer vent appointment if it has at least a year since the last cleaning. Dryer vent cleaning is an inexpensive service that can truly be lifesaving. Instead of waiting for one of the warning signs to appear, be proactive and call the professionals at THC. Rest assured that your dryer is not costing you any excess money or exposing you and your family to any undue risk. Regulations change periodically as well and yearly services allow your venting system to be evaluated for its adherence to the current codes. For instance, plastic vents are now required to be replaced with metal and secured without screws to prevent clogging. This is an updated requirement that your technician would make you aware of on a routine visit.
